Building a Virtual Network - Part III

Putting together the virtual Network

Assigning a static IP to Ubuntu Server. Log in to Ubuntu Server, issue the following command:

sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces

nano is a command line text editor and the above command will open the network configuration file in it. See screenshot on what to change.
Configure Ubuntu with Static IP

To commit your changes use the following keystrokes:
Press “Ctrl + x” to exit
Press “Y”  to confirm
Press “Enter” to commit

Next, lets make sure our DNS servers are correct with:

sudo nano /etc/resolv.conf

Change the IP addresses of the nameserver entries if needed. Type the following to make the changes take effect.
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Configure a static IP address on the Windows 2003 Server:
Go to the start menu, select Control Panel >> Network Connections right click Local Area Connection and select Properties from the context menu. Select TCP/IP and configure with the appropriate settings.
Static IP setting Windows Server 2003
Static IP Server 03

To complete the network configuration we need to connect to the firewall from a web browser. pfSense has no GUI, but is administered via a web browser. Point your VM's web browser to http://192.168.11.2. You'll be prompted for a username and password. User Name = admin Password = pfsense.

A wizard will guide you through some initial settings:
Hostname = fischer
Domain = lopez.loc
DNS Servers =   XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
Set your time zone

Configure WAN Interface - THESE SETTING ARE FOR MY NETWORK. ADJUST AS NEEDED!
Selected Type
= Static
IP Address = 192.168.0.10 / 24
Gateway = 192.168.0.1

Verify LAN IP

Set new admin password

DONE!

All VM's are configured with the correct IP settings (The workstations are DHCP). We now install webmin on the Ubuntu server. From the terminal enter.

wget http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/webadmin/webmin_1.480_all.deb

sudo dpkg -i webmin_1.480_all.deb

Ubuntu may give you dependency errors. to force installation of required dependencies enter and installation should complete

sudo apt-get install -f

To test our web server and our admin tools (Webmin) for Kasparov. Fire up Tal (Windows XP Pro) and point your browser to http://192.168.11.3 to test your Apache2 Web Server and https://192.168.11.3:10000 to connect to Webmin on port 10000. The webmin username is admin and the password is blank.

That completes installation and configuration for Kasparov and Fischer. Let's make Lasker a domain controller ...
